Rated PG (for some thematic elements, rude humor and action)
Zootopia has a lot to like. Fast-paced humor (except for the sloth scenes) and witty writing couple with the colorful and up-beat animation to form an experience that’s entertaining for all ages. Zootopia contains a certain level of allegory and commentary on modern society that should keep adults engaged (if not over-whelmed), while the action-packed plot will capture any kid’s attention and imagination.
The film is ambitious and heavy-handed to a fault. The writers traded political allegory for emotional impact, and this is the film’s primary weakness. Clever jokes and use of symbolism do not a good film make (even when there’s cute animals involved).
However Zootopia is a good film, and its strengths outshine its weaknesses. Check it out but don’t try and read too deeply into the writers’ intentions–this is a film for kids after all, and it is best enjoyed as such.
