Rated PG (for thematic elements, an accident scene and some suggestive material)
Disney presents Queen of Katwe which tells an underdog chess story about a young girl from the slums of Uganda–and it’s based on a true story. The fact that this film is strictly based on true events adds a certain satisfaction to watching it that would otherwise be absent (mainly because we’ve all seen this kind of story before).
If the phrases “Disney” and “predictable story” have already come to mind as negatives for you then this may not be a film that you’d enjoy all that much. Although, having said that, it does have a remarkable story that is told well and without over-simplification. The film clearly identifies with adult audiences while maintaining its PG-rating which is a huge plus for families.
Universally inspiring and fun to watch, Queen of Katwe really nails it. The director skillfully utilizes the talented cast and displays a knack for style. Give it a shot, especially if you enjoy true stories.
