Hunt for the Wilderpeople is one of those dramas that has true character. It’s tone, a rare species of the dramedy variety, is memorable and rife in every scene.
Filmed in the beautiful New Zealand by director Taika Waititi, the environment helps to establish a mise en scène that helps add meat to this comedic yet endearing story. A peculiar soundtrack and a cast that fully embodies their characters also contribute to the this film’s substance and sincerity. Sam Neill (who delivers an affecting performance) and child actor Julian Dennison share a particularly memorable (and funny) chemistry. What could’ve easily been just a quirky drama reveals itself instead to be a convention-free exploration of family life.
It’s difficult to find a film that’s both as easy to recommend to all audiences and that happens to be of this caliber; go watch this now.
