Dir. Kelly Fremon Craig
Rated R (for sexual content, language and some drinking – all involving teens)
This impressive and impassioned directorial debut won multiple awards and nominations for Kelly Fremon Craig, who self-wrote this coming-of-age dramedy. The Edge of Seventeen is easily one of the best of its kind to come along in some time. The film stars Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), who delivers yet another incredible performance. This young actress/singer deserves more recognition! Co-stars include Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick who absolutely nail their sharply-written roles as well. Some of the lesser-known cast members also put in some memorable work.
The film’s a treat that not only manages to avoid certain genre clichés but also remains engaging, funny, touching, nostalgic, and even realistic throughout. It’s better than just about any film I can think of at depicting what life is like for a modern high-schooler. There’s an uncommonly intelligent balance of comedy and conflict in this film that will have you wanting more even up to the film’s end.
After this unique and memorable film, I can’t wait to see what’s next from this new director.
