Miss Hokusai

Overall Rating: 3/5

October 14, 2016
Dir. Keiichi Hara
Rated PG-13 (for mature thematic material including sexual situations and images)

At times visually hypnotizing, Miss Hokusai, is an anime loosely based on the actual lives of a Japanese artist and his daughter. This is a journey through an “art-scape”that creates a self-referential atmosphere in which the line between story-telling and representation are blurred. Often vague and disjointed, this series of vignettes is difficult to follow or to make sense of. One can speculate certain symbolism, but at the end of the day I think Miss Hokusai is trying to evoke a sense of wonder and nostalgia more than to tell any particular story.

Strengths:

  • Unique and immersive visuals
  • Emotive scenes
  • Attention to detail

Weaknesses

  • Lack of direction
  • Jarring music choices
  • Pacing issues

Check this one out if you’re looking for an artistic animated film for adults.
