Lights Out

Overall Rating: 2/5

July 22, 2016
Dir. David F. Sandberg
Rated PG-13 (for terror throughout, violence including disturbing images, some thematic material and brief drug content)

This is a moderately unique horror film, but there’s nothing too original here. It’s kept lean, puts practical effects to good use, and has some above-average acting for a horror film. None of those qualities, however, can make up for the overwhelmingly mediocre writing.

The number of jump-scares crossed the line into absurdity part-way through the film, trading terror for irritation and drastically taking away from its effectiveness.

Not memorable. Not recommended.
